How to Care for Locally Grown Flowers: Tips from the Farmer’s Perspective

Jun 29, 2025

When customers pick up a bouquet of locally grown flowers, they’re taking home more than just something pretty for their table. They’re supporting sustainable agriculture, embracing seasonal beauty, and choosing a product that’s often fresher and more environmentally friendly than its imported counterparts.

In this episode of the Flower Farmer Forum podcast, I dive into flower care from the customer’s point of view. These flowers haven’t been shipped thousands of miles or doused in chemicals to prolong their shelf life. That means they require a bit more attention—but with a few easy steps, customers can enjoy their blooms for even longer.

Here are my top tips for making the most of locally grown flowers:

1. Change the Water Daily

Fresh water is key. Bacteria builds up quickly, especially with organic stems. Daily water changes keep blooms happy and hydrated.

2. Keep Flowers Cool and Out of Sunlight

Heat and direct sun can cause flowers to wilt prematurely. Place arrangements in a cooler part of your home away from windows, heaters, and vents.

3. Avoid Placing Flowers Near Fruit

Ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which can accelerate wilting. Keep your blooms in a different room for best results.

4. Trim Stems at an Angle

Cutting stems on an angle allows more surface area for water uptake. A sharp knife or clean clippers work best—just be sure to trim a bit off each day or every couple days.

5. Remove Leaves Below the Water Line

Any foliage submerged in water will start to rot, encouraging bacterial growth. Always strip stems so only bare stems are in the water.

6. Ask for—and Share—Care Instructions

Customers don’t always know how to care for flowers, and that’s OK. As farmers and florists, it’s our job to educate. Whether it’s a care card tucked in the bouquet or a link to a blog post or video, clear instructions go a long way.

7. Use Email Marketing to Stay Connected

Follow-up emails with care tips, bouquet inspiration, and new offerings are great ways to keep customers engaged and satisfied.

Locally grown flowers reflect the rhythm of the seasons and the heart of the community. By giving your customers the knowledge to care for their blooms, you're not just selling flowers—you’re deepening their connection to the land and your farm.
